How to get a barbering or hairdressing apprenticeship

Are you looking for an exciting job as a barber or hairdresser?

One of the key steps to becoming a qualified barber or hairdresser is undertaking your apprenticeship. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re considering a career change, Bendigo TAFE provides hands-on TAFE courses that can provide you with the best opportunity to prepare yourself for your hairdressing career.

Here’s a checklist to see if you’re ready for an apprenticeship.

Get a qualification

Completing a TAFE qualification such as the  Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416)  or the Certificate III in Barbering (SHB30516) course can help you to develop hands-on skills that employers are looking for.

Bendigo TAFE also offers the Certificate II in Salon Assistant (SHB20216) which will help you to develop the basic skills required to start working in a hairdressing salon as an assistant.

Tips on where to start

  • Do any salons appeal to you more than others?
  • Find out what kind of salons they are – do they specialise in any areas: - Long hair work, bright colours, competition work? - Men's salons, family salons? - Big or small salons? - Hair and beauty salons?

Check your resume

  • Check your résumé is up to date – does it say you want a job in hairdressing?
  • If you are dropping off résumés – dress like you are going to an interview.
  • Ask to speak to the manager to hand your résumé to them.
  • Hair is the most important part of your presentation – clean and styled.
  • Ask one of your referees or a suitably experienced family member to check if your interview presentation is suitable.
  • If you really like the people and the salon – go back again in three or four weeks – just to see if anything has come up.

More options

  • It may help to do  a Certificate II in Salon Assistant (SHB20216), preparation for work,  resume writing or interview skills to give you more confidence.
  • Look online to find a salon near where you live
