This course is ideal for people managing a small retail or wholesale outlet, or a section or department within a larger retail store or wholesale business. Learn how to manage merchandise and store presentation and lead and manage people.

Duration
Classes are held Mondays and Tuesday from 9am to 3pm for 17 weeks. This course is available in 2 different formats, these are:
  • Class Room Based delivery and assessment at Bendigo TAFE (Full Time). Classes are held Monday's and Tuesday's from 9.00am to 3.00pm for a Semester. This format is offered twice a year commencing in both February and July.
  • "The Next Step to Success" Employment based delivery and assessment. Finding the time to gain a qualification in today's busy life with our demanding careers can be difficult. This Retail Management course is designed for those already working in the retail industry. Attend a 3 hour workshop one evening per month at Bendigo TAFE and also study in your own time. Our experienced trainers will assist you in the workshops and can visit you at your workplace if required. This format is able to be enrolled into at any time during the year and is classified as part time. This qualification is also available through Recognition of Prior Learning or Rapid Recognition at any time during the year for those who are already working in the retail industry at this level.

Course pre-requisites

There are two alternative pathways for entry into Certificate IV in Retail Management.
Pathway 1 - Be recognised as competent, through a recognised training program or recognition process, against the following units of competency:
  • Work effectively in a retail environment (SIRXIND001A)
  • Communicate in the workplace (SIRXCOM001A)
  • And have obtained the following units of competency from Certificate III in Retail:
    •  Coordinate interaction with customers (SIRXCCS003A)
    •  Maintain store safety (SIRXOHS002A)
    •  Maintain store security (SIRXRSK002A)
    •  Build relationships with customers (SIRXSLS004A)
  • OR Certificate III Wholesale:
    •  Optimise customer & territory coverage (SIRWSL003A)
    •  Maintain business to business relationships (SIRXCCS006A)
    •  Build relationships with customers (SIRXSLS004A)
Pathway 2 - Have sufficient relevant wholesale or retail employment experience. A current or previous job role that involves or has involved in the application of the above competencies, would be a satisfactory indicator for entry. A determination need not involve a formal process of measuring, evaluation or recording performance against the units of competency.
Examples of evidence to support a determination could include:
  • job descriptions and references from current or past employers
  • an entry interview to determine what competencies have been applied in the whoelsale or retail environment in a paid or voluntary capacity
