Building on the skills gained in the Certificate IV in Design (CUA40715), the Diploma of Graphic Design will help you take the next step in your design career by honing and building on those skills. Learn how to combine technical, creative and conceptual skills to create concepts and designs that meet client requirements.

    Career progression opportunities for a Graphic Designer include positions as Studio Manager, Art Director or Creative Director.

  • An interview by teaching staff, a literacy and numeracy assessment and presentation of a folio which provides evidence of your technical skills and ability to:

    • Produce multiple examples of graphic design work that respond effectively to different design challenges.
    • Produce typography that supports the overall design solution.
    • Use graphic design industry software.

Course overview


This course is designed for students combining technical, creative and conceptual skills in preparation for a career as a Graphic Designer or students building a professional portfolio of original design work so they can apply for other design focussed courses such as a Bachelor of Design. You will develop a thorough understanding of the design process and be ready to solve a range of visual communication problems.

You will learn to create concepts for real-world projects involving design and layout, drawing, typography, visual communication, illustration and designing for the web techniques. You will work in a studio environment and learn to respond to client briefs, plan your daily workflow and work in collaboration with other creatives.

To complement your technical skills you will graduate with employability skills, you’ll know how to deliver to a deadline and you’ll develop project management skills.You will develop a professional portfolio of original design work.


Through hands-on experience you will learn the roles of industry-standard applications within Adobe Creative Cloud. You will develop the professional skills required to effectively use software such as Adobe’s InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, XD and Dimension.


Your course is delivered in clusters of units designed to give you hands-on instruction in the range of techniques and tasks you can expect to experience in industry.
