Certificate II in Automotive Studies

“The best thing about studying at Bendigo TAFE was gaining theoretical knowledge mixed in with practical learning.”

Sometimes a hands-on learning environment and a passion for what you’re studying are just the things you need to thrive. They certainly were Hamish’s key to success.

“I went to an academic school but it wasn’t really for me. TAFE was a good alternative. From the start, teachers were friendly and I could connect with them, which was a great thing for learning,” said the 18-year old who has just completed his Certificate II in Automotive Studies.

“I’ve always been interested in the engineering of vehicles. We have six Range Rovers at home and I’ve always been involved in projects with it.
“The best thing about studying at Bendigo TAFE was gaining theoretical knowledge mixed in with practical learning. This is important within the automotive industry. My teachers go through things step by step and I had opportunities to work alone and in a team to expand my skills.”

Transitioning from school to TAFE had its challenges but a positive attitude kept Hamish going.

“It was a difficult switch. My family really wanted me to be sure about my decision as it was a big commitment. I had to travel 1.5 hours from Newham to Bendigo for classes while making sure I didn’t miss a day. This award shows that all the effort I put in was really worth it,” he said.

Hamish’s strong work ethic is evident to his teachers and employers alike. His work placement with a local bus company has led him to secure a diesel mechanic apprenticeship beginning this year.

“I’m really excited about it as I’ll be doing things that really interest me. I’ll be gaining an insight into how different people think of different ways to engineer design and exposed to a variety of experiences. It’s an opportunity that’s next to priceless!”
