Certificate IV in Lifestyle and Leisure
Trainee with the City of Greater Bendigo
Bendigo TAFE Trainee of the Year 2009

Due to an accident I was forced out of a career driving trucks. During rehabilitation discussions led to options available to gain employment within a new area.   This led to me enrolling in a lifestyle and leisure course which in turn got me involved with the City of Greater Bendigo (COGB) and undertake planned activity work with groups as a volunteer.

This led to my involvement with the COGB transport program and, given my background in transport, it was an easy transition. This experience gave me the confidence to apply for a traineeship.

When I commenced at Bendigo TAFE I was unsure of myself and was overwhelmed at the amount of work. Through persistence and regular meetings with the Course Coordinator I was able to break it down into segments and determine priorities. I became more confident at answering questions in class even though I was the only male in the class.

The training I completed at Bendigo TAFE and the support from the COGB helped boost my personal confidence, and helped me adjust to my new career path.

The transport program at COGB has also expanded. I identified a need for two vehicles in the program, with the support of enough volunteers to facilitate this. I am able to negotiate with clients and volunteers, and feel that my good rapport with these people has enhanced the service provided.
