Located in the original Mechanics Institute and Free Library in McCrae Street Bendigo, restaurant 18eightyseven was officially opened on 20 April 1887 and is classified "A" by the National Trust. The magnificent octagonal building with its domed skylight roof, original gasolier (the sole survivor of only two produced), corinthian columns, and upper gallery combine to make this one of Victoria's most evocative historical interiors.
In September 1994 the room was opened by the hospitality department primarily as a training restaurant for students. The restaurant is fully licensed (no BYO) and caters for private and corporate functions along with their scheduled training calendar.
