Sustainability

As we educate and train so many of the future workforce, Bendigo TAFE believes education and training organisations have a unique opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future.  But to do this effectively, we have to re-educate and re-train ourselves so that we lead by example.

Our Environmental Sustainability Strategy articulates our commitment and the steps that we need to take to contribute to a sustainable future for ourselves and all those who come into association with us.

We have set up a structure that will support and deliver our strategy within both the education and training teams and support operations of the Institute.  Within each team there are numerous staff who have been nominated as 'champions'.  Their role is to generate the momentum needed to create change within ourselves and the students that we teach.

We have also developed an Environmental Sustainability Strategy for 2011

The Sustainable Operations Team is chaired by our Procurement Officer.  The team consists of representatives from all operational units of the Institute.  Their goals are to devise create programs and processes required to achieve the targets set out in the strategy.  They will focus on the following areas:

  • reduction in water consumption;
  • reduction in energy used;
  • starting a process of more robust data collection on our waste streams;
  • review of the vehicle fleet and purchasing policy.

The team are committed to being the catalyst that will ensure Bendigo TAFE becomes a sustainable workplace.

The education and training team is chaired by our specialised Sustainability Project Officer who is also the Teaching Department Manager for Sustainability and Design.  The team consists of representatives from every school in the Institute.  Their goal is to assist with the process ensure sustainability is embedded into every course, qualification and program that we deliver.  Some key focus areas are:

  • staff professional development;
  • promotion of sustainable initiatives at Institute wide events;
  • creating tools, processes and generating ideas to all staff within the Institute.

The team are committed to achieving their goals and realising the ambition that every graduate from Bendigo TAFE will be a sustainable practitioner who will make informed decisions about sustainability today, that will benefit us now and into the future.

Examples of projects and activities being undertaken by the Institute that support our Sustainability agenda include:

  • Institute wide - office wise paper recycling, printing monitoring and reduction, removal of bottled water facilities
  • Human Resources - development of online staff professional development
  • Redevelopment of the Charleston Road Trade Centre
  • Redevelopment of the Echuca Campus Trade Training Facility including the installation of a 26Kw solar array which currently produces 172Kwh per day.
