Classroom time is just the beginning of your journey at Bendigo TAFE. The real magic happens when you take the driver’s seat in your own learning. That’s where self-directed study comes in – giving you the freedom to grow skills, gain confidence, and explore topics that inspire you.
Your Learning, Your Way
Self-directed study is learning that happens outside your scheduled classes – but it’s just as important. Guided by your teachers yet shaped by your personal goals, it’s your chance to:
- Revisit lessons until they click
- Work through assignments and practical activities
- Dive deeper into areas you’re passionate about
- Prepare for placements, projects, and assessments
It’s not “extra homework” – it’s your toolkit for becoming a confident, independent learner.
How Much Time Do You Need?
While every course is different, most students set aside 5–10 hours per week for self-directed study. Depending on your program, that might look like:
- Watching how-to videos or tutorials
- Practising industry skills
- Completing e-learning modules
- Collaborating with classmates on group tasks
If you’re studying in areas like Early Childhood Education and Care, Individual Support, or Nursing, these extra hours are critical for mastering techniques, reflecting on placement experiences, and preparing for real-world work.
