Foundations Adult Learner of the Year Award

Certificate II in General Education for Adults

“Before Bendigo TAFE, I never had a good education.”

Adam left school at the age of 14 to care for his mother and didn’t go back to education for four years. When he turned 18, he decided to move out of home and seek help from support services.

That’s when he was recommended Bendigo TAFE’s general education course.

“Before I started the course, I didn’t believe I could do what I wanted to do and go where I wanted to go. I never passed year 7 and didn’t think I could recover from the amount of education I’ve lost over the years,” he said.

But his perseverance, combined with ample support from the course, put Adam on a new path to success.

“The course really helped me with the basics I needed, like writing reports and creating a resume, which are the kind of things I never knew. I managed to find a job at a bakery halfway through my studies,” he shared.

“I really enjoyed the course – the teachers were really great and one of my favourite parts was the opportunity to do hands-on projects like fundraising for charity.”

Adam plans to take advantage of the tertiary enabling program with La Trobe University as a pathway into a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics this year.

“I watched a lot of medical shows while caring for my mum. That’s how I found out what I wanted to strive towards. Now that I’ve finished the general education course, I know what I’ve got to do to reach where I want to be,” he said.
