Bendigo's top TAFE learners have been recognised at this year's Industry Excellence Awards, celebrating outstanding achievements in vocational skills.

The awards highlight the impact of practical, hands-on training for learners who are using education to transform their future.

Meet some of our winners:

Bendigo TAFE Student of the Year: Campbell McNair
Award Sponsor: Greater City of Bendigo

When Campbell NcNair walked into Bendigo TAFE to begin a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, he wasn't just starting a course; he was rebuilding a life.

After a long career in a demanding frontline role, Campbell reached a point where life called for a new direction.

Stepping away from the work that had defined him for decades wasn't easy, but it created space for something he'd quietly loved or years to finally take centre stage: cooking.

"At 50, I needed something that would get me back into the community and give me a purpose again. Cooking has always been that thing for me," Campbell reflects.

What began as a personal healing journey soon became a professional transformation. Campbell found himself thriving in Bendigo TAFE's commercial kitchens. While the facilities impressed him, it as the people who made the difference.

"The staff were amazing. The teachers brought real industry experience into the classroom, and that made all the difference," he says.

"Being a good cook isn't just about the food - it's about hygiene, safety, organisation and understanding how a kitchen really runs."

His placement at Chauncy, a two-hatted French restaurant in Heathcote, pushed his skills even further. Campbell gained the confidence to imagine a future he once thought was out of reach.

He often told his ife that if he hadn't joined the police force, he would have become a chef. Now, with his qualification in hand, that dream is real. He can walk into a pub, RSL, or sports club and proudly say, "Do you need a chef?"

Campbell's ambitions stretch far beyong Australia's borders. His ultimate goal is humanitarian work - using his cooking skills to support displaced communities overseas.

"Sometimes there are tens of thousands of people who need food. With my police bacjground and my cookery qualification, I feel I could really contribute if I was deployed in those environments," Campbell says.

Winnign Student of the Year at the Industry Excellence Awards is a milestone he never expected, but one that reflects the courage, resilience and purpose behind his journey.

"Cooking changed my life," Campbell says.

"I thought I'd be in the police force forever, but now I have a qualification I can take anywhere in Australia - or anywhere in the world."

Campbell McNair is proof that it's never too late to rewrite your story and use it to help others.

In addition to the Bendigo TAFE Student of the Year Award, Campbell was also awarded:

  • Student of the Year: Commercial Cookery, sponsored by Cadell Food Service.

Bendigo TAFE Inclusivity and Accessibility Award: Kj Avers
Award Sponsor: Bendigo TAFE

Kj's journey into community services began in the quiet moments of her own adolescence, when counsellors and support workers became lifelines during a difficult time.

Although she excelled academically, school was socially overwhelming, and by year 9 she made the painful decision to leave.

At the time, she felt like she had failed.

What she would later discover is that she hadn't failed at all; she simply needed a different pathway.

Today, Kj is a standout student in the Certificate IV and Diploma of Community Services at Bendigo TAFE, and the winner of the Inclusivity and Accessibility Award. Her story is one of resilience, self-discovery and the transformative power of the right support.

Returning to study was a turning points. With educators who understood that learning looks different for everyone, KJ found a place where she could thrive.

"With the correct support in place, I can study and I can reignite that love for learning," she said.

"Just because it didn't work the way it does for most people doesn't mean I can't get to where I want to go. I just have to go a different way." She said.

That mindset has shaped not only her studies, but her work. When she first enrolled, Kj was unemployed and applied or more than a hundred jobs a week. Then she discovered the Student Ambassador program at Bendigo TAFE - and everything changed.

Now on campus four days a week, she supports students from all walks of life, connecting with them, advocating for them, and helping them navigate challenges she understands deeply.

Her lived experience as an autistic, ADHD woman and LGBTQIA+ member has strengthened her commitment to inclusivity.

It's helped her build genuine rapport with students who may feel unseen or misunderstood, and it's fuelled her passion for creating environments where everyone feels they belong.

"The big thing is caring about other people," she says.

"Advocating for people has been a huge priority and goal for me."

Being recognised for the Inclusivity and Accessibility Award is something she stills find surreal.

"High school me would never believe it," she reflects.

"It feels like climbing Mount Everest from where I was."

Kj's achievements are remarkable not just because of how far she has come, but because of how many others she lifts along the way.

Her journey is a testament to the power of accessible education, the importance of community and the impact one person can have when they're supported to be their full, authentic self.

"Going to TAFE has been one of the best decisions I've made," she says.

And for the students she supports, and the community she is shaping, it's clear that decision is changing lives far beyond her own.
