How to be set up for success at TAFE

How to be set up for success at TAFE

Know your timetable

Attending TAFE

All apprentices and trainees that physically attend TAFE will be issued with a timetable. This is a set structure that sets out the appropriate format for course completion. It is important for all apprentices and trainees to be released from work to attend their classes to avoid falling behind in their work. Failure to attend may result in units not being completed resulting in an extension of time. All attendances at TAFE can be viewed through the ASMS Employer Portal.

Workplace Delivery

All apprentices and trainees that complete their training within the workplace will be issued with a formal structure that will be discussed with you at the commencement of training. Generally, apprentices and trainees will be required to complete set work before having a trainer come on site to do a workplace assessment. It is important to make sure your apprentice, or trainee is meeting the minimum training hours for non-routine duties to complete their coursework, and the trainer can attend scheduled visits to assist the apprentice or trainee and assess competence within the workplace. Failure to complete coursework and be assessed on site may result in an extension of time.

Come prepared

Whether your apprentice or trainee comes into campus or is training on site, they need to ensure that they come prepared with the correct PPE, workbooks and materials to complete all training requirements. Bendigo Kangan Institute has strict rules around PPE and participating in the workshop. Any apprentice that does not comply may not be able to attend for the day and will be sent back to work.

Match hands-on skills with learning

At TAFE your apprentice or trainee will learn different subjects, we recommend that where possible you try and match their tasks with what they are learning to help them with their applied knowledge.

Individuals all learn differently. To get the best out of your apprentice or trainee, it is important to understand how they learn best. The three main learning styles are Visual, Auditory or Kinaesthetic. Your apprentice or trainee may be a combination of styles.

To try and make the most of your coaching and training we recommend that you:

·         Explain what the task is and the steps that need to occur.

·         Demonstrate the task

·         Provide opportunity to practice

·         Provide feedback to let them know how they are going.

Our qualified trainers will work closely with your apprentice or trainee to help them through the journey at TAFE. Learning support is available on Campus to assist.
