Award-winning apprentice helping to build regional Victoria

A Bendigo TAFE carpentry apprentice has been recognised by Master Builders Victoria for outstanding achievement, highlighting the vital role regional training plays in strengthening Victoria’s construction workforce.

Myles Newstead, 37, was named Craftsperson Award winner at the Bendigo Regional Apprentice of the Year Awards. The prestigious award recognises apprentices who demonstrate sustained excellence, passion and skill in their craft.

Myles was celebrated for his strong technical capability, creativity and commitment to high-quality workmanship.

The award is a milestone for Myles who returned to central Victoria after more than a decade overseas working in electrical, landscaping, hospitality and green infrastructure. He turned to TAFE to find a trade that aligned with his creativity and long-term goals.

“I quite enjoy being creative – that’s where carpentry is more up my alley,” Myles said.

With his prior experience recognised, Myles is completing his apprenticeship faster while working with Maeco Builders in Seymour, focusing on new builds, renovations and high-performance passive homes, an emerging area of demand in regional construction.

Myles credits Bendigo TAFE’s hands-on learning environment, supportive teachers and access to industry-grade materials as key factors in building his confidence and capability.

“It’s been good to have a space where you’ve got room to make mistakes,” he said.

“On a worksite you’re rushed – here you can ask questions and actually learn.”

Apprentices are critical to the workforce required in central and northern Victoria to support the region’s housing and commercial construction pipelines.

Myles’ award highlights the importance of accessible regional training, and the contribution Bendigo TAFE apprentices make to local industry.
