Honouring a lifetime of leadership

The Outstanding Achievement in the TAFE and Skills Sector Award recognises Marg O’Rourke OAM’s enduring leadership and advocacy in education.

Marg’s contribution to Bendigo Kangan Institute spans more than 15 years. She joined Bendigo TAFE’s Board in 2008, led the merger with Kangan Institute in 2014 as Board President, and continued to serve as Deputy Chair before being elected Board Chair in 2022. Her tenure concluded in August 2024.

Throughout her leadership, Marg helped steer Bendigo Kangan Institute through major milestones – from pandemic recovery and campus revitalisations to sector-wide reforms and government transitions.

Her guidance was instrumental in delivering key projects including the:

·         $8m Food and Fibre Centre of Excellence, Bendigo Charleston Road Campus (2017 to 2018)

·         $18m Health and Community Centre of Excellence, Bendigo City Campus (2018)

·         $60m Bendigo City Campus Revitalisation (2021)

·         Essendon Health Hub at Essendon Campus (2022)

·         Skills and Jobs Centre, Echuca Campus (2023)

Marg’s commitment to education continues in her current role as Head of La Trobe’s Bendigo Campus, where she continues to champion access, innovation and community impact.

Victorian Teacher/Trainer of the Year winner: Tarmi A’Vard

With 20+ years in justice and community services, Tarmi A’Vard blends academic depth with real-world experience. Before joining Bendigo TAFE, she taught criminology at university – now applying that foundation as a teacher of the Diploma of Justice and Diploma of Community Services.

Tarmi is known for classes that are hands-on, student-centred and inclusive. She uses flipped classrooms, simulations and trauma-informed methods to support diverse learners.

Standout innovations include introducing excursions as well as progressive case simulations where students manage dynamic client files and practise risk assessments, boosting confidence and job readiness.

“My secret weapon for keeping students engaged is my authenticity – showing up and being a learner alongside my students,” she said.

“A small shift that I made during my teaching that’s had an enormous impact is introducing excursions for students. We go to courts and prisons so students can actually see the space where they might choose to work.”

Tarmi’s latest achievement follows her recognition as Bendigo TAFE’s 2025 Teacher of the Year.

"I feel deeply honoured to be recognised as Victorian Teacher/Trainer of the Year,” Tarmi said.

“Vocational education has the power to transform lives and strengthen communities, and I am proud to play a small part in that journey. This award reflects the inspiration I draw from my students, colleagues, family and community every day."

Victorian School-based Apprentice of the Year finalist: Zac Dudderidge

A second-year engineering apprentice and Year 12 student at Bendigo Senior Secondary College, Zac’s passion for welding and fabrication began at home, helping his father repair vehicles and teaching himself through online tutorials to build his own go-kart.

That curiosity quickly evolved into a career path, one he’s now pursuing through a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade at Bendigo TAFE.

“I’ve always enjoyed working on independent welding projects at home, which inspired me to pursue a career in fabrication,” Zac said.

“The quality of my training is exceptional. I have a dedicated trainer at Bendigo TAFE who supports my learning by challenging me, identifying what I need to improve on and answering my questions about things that I am unsure.

“My ability to stay committed to finishing what I set out to do has been vital to my success as a school-based apprentice.”

Zac’s achievement reflects his drive, resilience and passion for hands-on learning.
