Castlemaine nursing course shaping study – and life – decisions

A new Diploma of Nursing course in Castlemaine is opening up local pathways into healthcare – and in some cases, influencing where students choose to live and build their future.

For Claire Tredinnick the attraction of a regional lifestyle was a motivator.

Claire is one of the first students enrolled in the Bendigo TAFE course, currently commuting from Brunswick while planning a move to Castlemaine later this year.

“I’m planning to relocate to the country sometime this year, but it’s still possible for me to commute on the V/Line for now,” she said.

Retraining after nearly 15 years working in music, Claire said the move into nursing reflects a long-held goal to work in a more people-focused field.

“I’m retraining as a mature age student after working in the arts for nearly 15 years,” said the 36-year-old.

“I just feel like I have always wanted to do something where I can give back to people.”

Claire said the opportunity to study in Castlemaine made the transition possible – while also supporting her plans to move to a regional community.

“I have an interest in moving out here, which is another reason why I decided to choose Castlemaine,” she said.

“I appreciate the sense of community here… and an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.”

Now just weeks into the course, Claire said the learning experience and support from teachers had reinforced her decision.

“I’m already really excited by everything that we’re learning,” she said.

“We have a really good support network… it’s feeling like a really great place to learn.”

The course is helping build a pipeline of skilled workers for regional healthcare, with clear pathways into further study and employment.

“I’m planning to… become an enrolled nurse,” Claire said, adding she is also exploring pathways to become a registered nurse.

For Claire, the experience is already shaping where she sees her future.

“One word about Castlemaine… peaceful.”

The Diploma of Nursing was recently introduced in Castlemaine at Bendigo TAFE’s Learning Hub in partnership with Dhelkaya Health. The program allows students to complete their training and clinical placements locally, making it easier for people to begin their nursing career without needing to relocate.
