Building confidence, skills and a future in the beauty industry
When Kirralee Nation decided to pursue a career change, she was looking for more than just a new job - she wanted a profession that felt creative, hands-on and meaningful. Drawn to the opportunity to help others feel confident and look their best, she enrolled in the Certificate III in Beauty Services (SHB30121) at Bendigo TAFE, taking the first step towards building a long-term career in the beauty industry.
Kirralee chose Bendigo TAFE because of its strong reputation and accessible learning environment. Knowing others had positive experiences gave her confidence that she would receive quality training and support to help her succeed. From the beginning, she appreciated the welcoming atmosphere and the strong focus on practical learning, which allowed her to develop real skills she could apply in industry settings.
A highlight of Kirralee’s experience was the hands-on nature of the course. Working with real clients enabled her to build confidence while developing essential technical and professional skills. She gained practical experience in treatments such as waxing, lash and brow tinting, tanning, manicure and pedicure services, and makeup application. Equally important were the client communication skills she developed, helping her understand how to deliver professional service and create positive client experiences.
“The hands-on approach made a big difference,” Kirralee explains. “Being able to practice skills in a real learning environment helped build my confidence and made the course more engaging and relevant to working in the beauty industry.”
As her knowledge and confidence grew, so did her ambition. Kirralee discovered that beauty offered not only creativity, but also strong career opportunities. Encouraged by the supportive teachers and practical learning environment, she decided to continue her pathway and enrol in the Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50121) to further develop her expertise and expand her career options.
“I decided to continue into the Diploma to gain more skills and knowledge to support my future goals,” she says. “Completing the Diploma felt like the best next step to further develop my skills and prepare myself for more advanced roles in the beauty industry.”
Looking ahead, Kirralee is focused on building experience in a salon environment while continuing to strengthen her technical capabilities. Her long-term goal is to open her own beauty business, where she can create a positive experience for clients and apply the skills she has developed through her studies. She is also interested in exploring opportunities to work internationally, including roles on cruise ships, combining her passion for beauty with the chance to travel and gain diverse industry experience.
Kirralee’s journey reflects how vocational education can help transform passion into a practical career pathway. The combination of supportive teachers, real-world learning, and clear progression opportunities has given her the confidence to pursue ambitious goals within the beauty industry.
She encourages others to consider a career in beauty to take the first step.
“The teachers are supportive and knowledgeable, and the course has a strong focus on practical learning rather than just theory,” Kirralee says. “Working with real clients helped build my confidence and skills, and the course has clearly prepared me for further study and a career in the beauty industry.”
Her experience demonstrates how starting with the Certificate III and progressing to the Diploma can help students steadily build skills, confidence and momentum - creating strong foundations for a successful future in beauty.
