Certificate III in Hospitality

Dustin O'Dell

Dustin O'Dell knows where he wants to go, and he’s already making it happen.

At just 18, he’s building a career in hospitality with real-world experience, practical training and a clear sense of purpose. He’s not waiting for the future to arrive. He’s preparing for it.

“I’ve always wanted to travel,” Dustin says. “I’ve been to Asia a few times and I’d love to go back and work there. Hospitality gives you that freedom, there’s always a job somewhere.”

That global mindset is matched by a grounded approach. Dustin works in a local café in Eddington, where he’s both a cook and front-of-house. He’s learning on the job, applying everything he picks up on  his Hospitality course at Bendigo TAFE.

“I make burgers, I serve customers, I make coffees,” he says. “And I’m getting better at all of it.”

Dustin enrolled at Bendigo TAFE to build on what he was already doing - to sharpen his skills, gain formal qualifications and open up more opportunities. He attended an open day, met the teachers, and knew straight away it was the right fit.

“The teachers are great,” he says. “They give you feedback that helps you improve. There’s always something to learn, and they’re there when you need support.”

That support has made a real difference. Dustin lives with dyslexia, and while writing and communication were once challenges, he’s now thriving in both.

“I’ve learned how to talk to customers more confidently,” he says. “I used to be nervous, but now I feel comfortable. I’ve also improved my writing - I’m doing better than I expected.”

He credits his teachers for helping him grow, not just in skills but in mindset. “They gave me honest feedback, and that helped me push through. Now I know I can do it.”

Dustin’s proud of how far he’s come, and excited about what’s next. His dream is to work on a cruise ship, combining his love of travel with his hospitality training. If not overseas, he’d love to run his own business here in Australia.

“I want to show people I can do it,” he says. “And I know now that I can.”

For anyone considering Hospitality at Bendigo TAFE, Dustin has simple advice: “Don’t give up. If something feels hard, find a way around it and keep going. You’ll get there.”

His story is proof that practical learning, supportive teachers and a bit of self-belief can take you anywhere, whether it’s a local café or a cruise ship halfway around the world.
