Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural)

Taylor Mann

From administration to industry recognition for building design excellence – Bendigo TAFE graduate Taylor Mann is creating a brilliant future for herself.

Taylor was awarded the 2024 Outstanding Student of the Year Award by Design Matters National, standing out as a rising star.

Taylor’s journey into building design didn’t begin in a studio or on a job site – it began at a desk in administration. Working in client relationship support at a building company, she quickly discovered a passion for design, sparked by modifying plans to meet client needs.

“Growing up, my dad was a builder, so I’ve always had an interest in buildings,” Taylor said.

“When someone suggested I look into drafting, I did a bit of research and decided to apply at Bendigo TAFE – and the rest is history.”

The leap of faith led Taylor to the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural), a two-year course she describes as both intense and incredibly rewarding.

“There were definitely challenging times, but the teachers made a huge difference,” she said.

“They were so supportive and approachable, and they made asking for help feel easy. We also covered a massive amount of content that really prepared us for industry work.”

Taylor credits much of her success to the practical, real-world focus of the Bendigo TAFE course and the community she found among her classmates.

“Our group was small but close-knit. We all came from different backgrounds but shared a common passion. That made the experience even more enjoyable,” she said.

Since graduating, Taylor has stepped confidently into her professional life, joining Penno Drafting and Design in Bendigo. There, she’s already working on a diverse range of projects, including home extensions, new builds, and custom outdoor structures.

“The team has been amazing – I’m learning every day and building up my knowledge with each project,” she said.

Winning the Outstanding Student of the Year award was a surprise, she admits.

“I had to read the email twice! I already felt proud of finishing the course but being recognised like this made it even more special,” she said.

“It’s amazing to know that all the hard work I put in was seen not just by my teachers and peers, but by the wider industry too.”

Looking ahead, Taylor hopes to become a registered building designer and one day start her own business.

“Right now, I’m focused on learning as much as I can and saying yes to every opportunity,” she said.

“There’s so much to take in – and I’m just getting started.”

The 2024 Outstanding Student of the Year Award was presented to Taylor at Design Matters National’s 2025 Kick-off event, with Taylor one of five recipients. Held in Melbourne in early 2025, the event brought together leading voices in the building design industry to celebrate emerging talent and innovation – with Taylor standing out as a rising star.
